The project took place under the overall framework of ERAWATCH activities which investigated the implementation of the Bologna Process and the importance of research activities in leading European universities and research agencies. The project was conducted via a direct survey of universities according to a standardized template, the development of direct contacts and requests for clarifications with different university offices. The project sought to gain an overview of the factors involved in and contributing to research activities conducted in public universities and national publicly funded research institutions. The study investigated the types of governance, levels of funding, levels of human resources (teaching, research and administrative staff, students), academic output and publishing. Nomisma was responsible for completing the templates for universities in Italy and Eastern Germany.
