Business Intelligence in the Territory

Business Intelligence is the set of digital processes and technologies that can be used to valorise the extensive information assets held by firms and local authorities by transforming raw data contained in management information systems into information that supports decision processes.

Big & Open Data, Business & Location Intelligence, Smart Cities & Communities are terms that are becoming increasingly familiar to many public and private organisations, yet the results achieved so far are limited and the gap between Italy and other European countries is widening.

In Nomisma's Third Report, the territorial dimension becomes the organisational unit in which the intelligent use of data and implementation of innovative digitalisation processes need to be reconsidered. The immense wealth of geographical data in the hands of public and private organisations is used merely for cartographic management of the territory, while its value for analytical and strategic decision-making support is underrated. Valorising this extensive wealth of information could lead to important competitive advantages for both firms and entities that operate in sectors that have strong connections to the territory (retail, agriculture, transport, health, environment, security forces, etc.) and are involved in governance and management of territorial development.
